Poppies (Tower of London, brushed aluminium)
61 x 91 cm, edition of 25
In 2014 artists Paul Cummins and Tom Piper created 888,246 ceramic poppies which filled the Tower of London’s famous moat in a truly memorable and emotional installation.
I was lucky to be able to see the poppies from the air when I took a helicopter trip (with the doors off) over London. It was a no-brainer to create a piece of art from the original photograph. After colouring the photograph digitally by hand it was printed on a slim sheet of brushed aluminium. This gives the piece an etched appearance and brings out the detail of the Tower of London and Tower Bridge. The vivid red of the poppies contrasts strongly with the silver of the metal, focusing our eyes on the installation and giving a sense of scale too.
A 10% donation from each piece will be given to The Royal British Legion, the nation's largest Armed Forces charity, providing care and support to all members of the British Armed Forces past and present and their families. www.britishlegion.org.uk.
Poppies is made to order. It can usually be created and delivered in around 10-14 days. An aluminium subframe on the back makes it incredibly easy to hang.
