“When I went to Hong Kong, I knew at once I wanted to write a story set there”

So said author Paul Theroux. And it’s not hard to see why. Although it has been in the news for all the wrong reasons recently Hong Kong is a still a wonderful mix of chaos and calm. It takes ‘hustle and bustle"‘ to a whole new level, with neon signs hanging over thronging streets selling everything under the sun. The most dramatic skyline in the world, with the most skyscrapers of any city, is surrounded by lush peaceful landscapes. And it has the world’s longest covered escalator too!

61 x 91 cm, £950

I’ve always been entranced by the chaotic hustle and bustle of Hong Kong. And Mong Kok truly embodies this. The name translates as ‘propserous’ or ‘crowded corner’, and was once described as the busiest district in the world by the Guinness Book of Records. The area is a multi-coloured mix of neon signs cramming every available space. It is a work of art.

This piece was created from an original photograph and digitally coloured by hand. Printing the image on a slim sheet of brushed aluminium gives a nod to the industrial feel of the signs and brings out the bright colours.

I hear many of these signs are being replaced. So I see this piece as an ode to nostalgia.

I seem to have work featuring taxis from many countries in my portfolio. There is something very satisfying about their shape, their colour, and in this case, the lighted sign on the roof of the cab, here in two languages.

This piece is created from an original photograph of a Hong Kong taxi. It is digitally coloured by hand and then printed on a slim sheet of brushed aluminium. This leaves the sign with a metallic finish which contrasts beautifully with the vivid red background.
