I love L.A. It reinvents itself every 2 days
So said Scottish comedian Billy Connolly. Some think Los Angeles is a marmite city where the haves and have nots exist side by side. It really is a mix of everything: Hollywood glamour, the cool vibe of the Venice Beach, the opluance of Beverly Hills, the shameful history of skid row, the tangling network of bumper to bumper freeways, breathtaking hiking trails, and sensational architecture. Like it or loathe it the City of Angels is fascinating and fantastic muse for an artist.

The steel ‘ribbons’ are designed to evoke a sense of speed and movement, and offer a modern interpretation of the city’s famous space-age ‘ Googie architecture.

Naturally I love the architecture of the Griffith Observatory. The 1930’s building boasts some lovely shapes and gorgeous details.

I've spent many hours capturing the beautiful abstract shapes of the Walt Disney Concert Hall, designed by the architectural genius Frank Gehry.
The outside was originally intended to be made with stone, but was replaced with matt stainless steel as a cost-saving measure, which makes it the perfect subject for my work. My fascination with shapes and lines influences most of my art. I love history and architecure. So a trip to photograph the iconic Norms restaurant was a no-brainer. I love the jagged shapes and orange lettering. It's a design classic, heavily influenced by Googie architecture, a movement inspired by car culture of the 40's and 50's.

I hired a helicopter to fly over the city with the doors off to capture this bird's eye view. I digitally coloured the photograph by hand, even the cars parked on the street. The Amtrak train - another of my favourite America icons. I love the shiny metallic exterior, contrasting with the splash of red and blue colour; the curve of the roof; and the fact that it is a 'double decker' - something we don't have in London, my hometown.

My fascination with shapes and outlines influences most of my art. I'm especially keen on aerial views, this is the best way to see the patterns of a city. I hired a helicopter to fly over Los Angeles with the doors off to capture this bird's eye view of The Coliseum, the historic home of the Los Angeles Rams football team.
