Ok, I’ll admit it. I’m in love. With New York. It has an aura and intoxicating personality which has captivated me since my first visit in 1981. It’s the city that never sleeps, the city of lights, the city of cloud-piercing skyscrapers. It’s a city bursting with boundless energy and a no-nonsense attitude. The Big Apple oozes history, stunning architecture, and spectacular skyline. It gives me goosebumps. I ❤️ New York.

We’re spolit for choice with incredible views of the Manhattan skyline but this is one of my favourites. Taken from Long Island City it features two of my favourite architectural landmarks from two different decades - the 1920’s Chrysler Building next to the United Nations from the 1940’s.
To create this piece I have digitally coloured my original photograph and printed it on a thin sheet of brushed aluminium. The aluminium picks out the shapes, outlines and details of the buildings and gives the image an etched appearance. The vivid fuchsia colour of the sky and river contrasts with the matt silver of the skyline and trees.

I’m obsessed with the shapes, colours, and industrial urban feel of New York’s fire hydrants, with their many different coats. With its stars and stripes this one seems about as American as you can get. I have also always loved the vivid colours and contrasts of American pop art, so the fluorescent green works well with the urban feel of the hydrant.

There’s no better way of seeing the beauty of New York than from the air. It really shows the beauty of Manhattan - the huge expanse of green right in middle of the sprawling metropolis and surrounded by water. Such unique geography.

The Oculus - possibly my favourite modern building in New York. Designed on the outside to look like “a bird taking flight from a young boy’s hand to show that no matter what obstacles the city faces it will always be hopeful.”

Seeing the plumes of steam bursting out of the chimneys was one of my first memories when I first came to visit city in the 1980’s. They just seem ‘so New York’, almost iconic landmarks in themselves.

I love the beautiful blue colour of the magnificent Manhattan Bridge. It often gets overshadowed by the more famous Brooklyn Bridge but this is equally beautiful I think. It looks like it has weathered the highs and lows of the Big Apple’s history with it’s faded colour and robust chunky design. I’ve been lucky enough to have taken a few helicopter flights over New York in recent years. With the doors off the flights really do provide a fantastic opportunity to photograph some exciting and unusual views for new work (as long as I don’t think too much about how high up I am and how the wind is pummelling my legs!).

Brooklyn is one of my favourite places on earth. I love its history, brick wharehouses, and stunning skyline views. On a recent visit this image caught my eye - Manhattan Bridge reflected in the gigantic Syrup Tanks from the Domino Sugar Refinery, a famous landmark on the Williamsburg waterfront since the 1880’s.
