my love affair with London

I’ve always been captivated by London: the views, the mix of old and new, the exquisite details of the historic buildings, and the abstract shapes of today’s superstructures. Much of my art is created from photographs taken while hanging out of a helicopter - the most exhilarating way to appreciate the beautiful patterns of London’s ever-changing landscape.

NEW 62 x 145 cm, edition of 25, £1250

The National Theatre on London's South Bank is one of my favourite artistic muses. Every time I visit I notice new angles and shapes. The simple Brutalist block shapes lend themselves to my style of art. This is one of my favourite angles – it almost seems to be 3-D here.

The piece is created from an original photograph digitally coloured and printed directly onto a super-thin piece of brushed aluminium. The metal brings out the vivid burnt orange colour of the sky contrasting it beautifully with the building’s stark grey concrete.

National Theatre is available with a pink, yellow, or teal sky. An edition is also available with the individual blocks filled with bright colours.

This piece is made to order. It can usually be created and delivered in around 2 weeks. An aluminium subframe on the back makes it simple to hang.

There’s something so beautiful about the Thames Barrier, built in the 1980’s to prevent Greater London being flooded. I think it’s the shape and curves of the gates, and the patterns and colour of the steel. It’s a work of art.

This piece is created from my original photograph, taken from the river. Once the image is digitally coloured, and printed on a thin sheet of brushed aluminium. This really brings out the glimmering metal of the barrier. Colouring the sky with a vivid pink contrasts beautifully with the silvery grey of the steel.

The iconic Battersea Power Station chimneys have dominated the South London skyline since the 1930’s when the first two were built. Demolition beckoned due to the damage after decades of exposure to sulphur. But the first of the new chimneys was completed in 2017 with 25,000 wheelbarrows of concrete - an exact replica of the original.

National Theatre (pink, brushed aluminium)
£1,195.00

62 x 145 cm, edition of 25, £1195

The National Theatre on London's South Bank is one of my favourite artistic muses. Every time I visit I notice new angles and shapes. The simple Brutalist block shapes lend themselves to my style of art. This is one of my favourite angles – it almost seems to be 3-D here.

The piece is created from an original photograph digitally coloured and printed directly onto a super-thin piece of brushed aluminium. The metal brings out the vivid pink colour of the sky contrasting it beautifully with the building’s stark grey concrete.

National Theatre is available with a pink yellow, or teal sky. An edition is also available with the individual blocks filled with bright colours.

This piece is made to order. It can usually be created and delivered in around 2 weeks. An aluminium subframe on the back makes it simple to hang.

£5,500.00

I’ve lived in London for a long long time and I never get fed up of seeing Battersea Power Station. It’s been a huge inspiration for my art. I think if you can identify a building solely by its outline that is a sign of a great design. And the power station is one of the best examples of this.

This piece is created from an original photograph. The shape of the power station and it’s bright white glow are made with neon (glass tubes), as are the bluey/purple plumes of smoke, harking back to its glory days in the 1970s. The glass tubes are then attached to a spray-painted aluminium box.

Go With The Flow (river Thames with real flowing river)
£25,000.00

60 x 140 x 6 cm, very limited edition of 3

My most ambitious piece to date. This piece features my favourite stretch of the river Thames, from Chiswick to Woolwich. Its beautiful shape and curves are perfect for my art.

The iconic shape of the river is laser-cut into a thin sheet of pewter, battered to give it that vintage money box feel, and fitted with acrylic. The acrylic is filled with is a low viscosity silicone fluid (a watery substance that doesn’t stagnate). The ‘water’ is lit by a stream of L.E.D lights and flows from left to right thanks to motors inside the pewter box. Tiny specs of mica powder catch the lights and make it easier for us to see the water moving.

And if you look closely you might just see a whale and a shopping trolley float by…

I love the shape of the Thames, especially this stretch from Chiswick to Woolwich, probably the most recognisable part of the river.

This piece is comprised of 15 separate layers of coloured acrylic, each one laser-cut in the shape of the river and placed around the outside of the previous layer.

You can see the river in its most recognisable shape in the centre, in light blue. Each coloured layer is the same distinctive shape of the Thames - it simply gets larger and wider with each colour, until it becomes this gorgeous cloud-like abstract shape.

The National Theatre on London's South Bank is one of the biggest inspirations for my art. Every time I walk past I notice new angles and shapes. The simple Brutalist block shapes lend themselves to my style of work.

The piece is created from an original photograph of one of my favourite views of the theatre, taken from Waterloo Bridge, with the Shard poking out in between the brutalist blocks. The image is digitally coloured by hand and printed directly onto super-thin brushed aluminium, which brings out the concrete texture, which contrasts nicely with the bright blue sky.

The repeated patterns of the ceiling and the circular room in the middle of the British Museum’s Great Court made it an obvious subject for my work. This piece is created from an original photograph. I believe that if you can tell what something is solely by its outline that is the mark of brilliant design. The London Taxi is one of my favourite examples of this. Its shape is iconic.

This piece was created from an original photograph of a taxi parked outside Charing Cross Station. I stripped the photograph back leaving a few edges to show its beautful lines and curves. The image is printed on a slim sheet of brushed aluminium, leaving metallic silver lines tracing the taxi’s shape, with the corners of the aluminium rounded to reflect the vehicle’s famous design.

£11,000.00

City of Light 2 is one of my most ambitious projects. It was concieved and created during my time as the Contemporary Collective gallery’s ‘Artist In Residence’ at the Bankside Hotel in London.

The piece is created from an original photograph of the view from the top of 1 Blackfriars, a new skyscraper on the city’s South Bank.

The outline of the skyline was laser cut into a copper box. The lower half, containing the outline of St Paul’s cathedral (the oldest building in the picture) was aged to give it a patina effect - the gorgeous turquoise colour. The upper half was untouched, leaving it with the orangey/brown finish, mimicking a sunrise or sunset.

L.E.D lights were placed inside the copper box producing a thin sliver of light that traces the outline of the skyline.
